The Gangsta Grillz mixtape king, DJ Drama, is now taking his career to a new level. He will be joining the Atlantic Records A&R Team. Transitioning from the mixtape arena to the executive overseeing recording projects, signing and developing talent will be interesting.
Craig Kallman, Atlantic Records A&R, affirms that DJ Drama is the perfect person for the job in the statement announcing the appointment he said, “One of the most accomplished DJs and mixtape masters, DJ Drama brings brilliant instincts and consummate skills to our A&R team. A hugely influential force in the hip-hop community, I know he’ll be a tremendous asset in signing and developing artists and making amazing records.”
DJ Drama garnered national recognition as T.I.’s official DJ and when he established the critically acclaimed mixtape series Gangsta Grillz. He has collaborated with with many of hip hop’s titans including Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and Kendrick Lamar. He was recognized as DJ of the Year at last year’s BET Hip Hop Awards.
DJ Drama recently opened Mean Street Studios which will become the base for Atlantic artist in the Atlanta market. DJ Drama was also instrumental in signing Atlanta Rapper Que to Atlantic Records last month.
Drama exclaimed “I’m extremely excited to embark on this new chapter in my relationship with Atlantic Records.” He went on and stated “My first two albums as an artist were on Atlantic. And I’m now looking forward to working with Craig and Julie [Atlantic chairman/COO Greenwald] in a new capacity, helping them break the label’s next crop of amazing talent.”
